Description:
This is a beautiful all-original and un-molested example of a Nazi Germany Rural Police Bayonet and scabbard made by the famous Weyersburg Kirschbaum & Co. (W.K.C.) firm in Solingen, Germany during the late 1930's.  These were some of the most attractive bayonets ever made by any country at any point, with both the bayonet and scabbard showing great attention to detail in their construction.  This particular example is district property marked on both the bayonet and scabbard "L.P. 2.".  This "L.P." district mark was for the Potsdam district in the Brandenburg province.  Brandenburg was just outside of Berlin, and had a quite large Rural Police contingent. The "2." in the property mark stands for the weapon number which would be assigned to a particular officer.  The 13" blade and metal parts are nickel plated, with the crossguard and pommel showing fine detail in the eagle head and oak leaf designs.  The blade is marked on both sides, with one side showing the W.K.C. knights head company logo stamped vertically, and the other stamped "Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie. Solingen" horizontally in-line with the blade.  The blade has a fuller or blood groove running all the way to the tip, which indicates that W.K.C. used a longer older blade cut down to 13" to construct this bayonet, quite common for many of the companies that made this pattern.  The handles are beautiful Stag with lots of character and color, with the right Stag grip panel featuring an inlaid Nazi Police Eagle device.  The scabbard is constructed with a brown leather body with a nickel plated throat and ferrule with scalloped inner edges.  The throat and ferrule are attached to the leather body with factory wire staples, visible from the rear.  The throat has a frog stug on the front as well as a screw that holds the mouthpiece/tensioner in place.  The brown leather body has a single seam stitched together at the rear, with the front featuring two vertical trim lines embossed in the leather.  As you can see from the pictures, this Rural Police Bayonet is in very good condition overall and has a great original look to it.  It has not been cleaned or "improved" by anyone since being brought back to the States as a war trophy.  We purchased it from a relative of the G.I. who brought it back, so it has never been on the collector's market before.  The original factory nickel plating is very attractive with a natural aged patina.  There are some areas of flaking, particularly on the top, back and beak tip of the pommel's eagle head.  The Stag grip panels are in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs, and the original Nazi Police Eagle is perfectly inlaid and tight in the right grip panel.  The blade on this bayonet is in great original condition.  It has never been sharpened or altered in any way, and the bright factory plating is 92 to 95% intact with only a little wear showing at the tip from scabbard wear.  The scabbard is also in great shape and consistent with the bayonet.  The leather is still pliable with nice tight stitching, the metal fittings are all tight to the scabbard, and the factory plating looks great with a nice tarnish/patina showing.  If you have been looking for a new addition to your militaria collection that would make a beautiful display piece, this W.K.C. Rural Police Bayonet would be an excellent choice.  It would be particularly nice displayed next to a Luger or 3rd Reich Pistol of some type, or by itself on a display stand in a bookcase.
