Description:
The Model 1903 was Winchester’s first semi-automatic rifle and was designed by T.C. Johnson. It is the predecessor of the later Model 1905, 1907, and 1910 semi auto rifles. The 1903 featured a 20” round barrel, a tubular magazine located in the buttstock, and a charging rod located at the front beneath the barrel. At the time, the new rifle was chambered for the equally new .22 Winchester Automatic Rimfire cartridge. This cartridge was designed at a time when both black powder and semi-smokeless powder .22-caliber rimfire cartridges were still loaded and popular. The intention was to prevent the use of anything but smokeless powder ammunition in the semi auto rifle, so as to avoid fouling the action. Black powder will gum up such actions and render them completely inoperable in short order. Unusually for a rimfire, the .22 W.A.R. uses an inside-lubricated bullet (45gr) like most modern cartridges as opposed to the outside-lubricated bullets now found only in rimfire cartridges like the .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle. None of those cartridges should be used in the Model 1903 rifle as the .22 W.A.R. is very dimensionally different from them. The present Model 1903 is in good condition for its age, which according to the Standard Catalogue of Winchester Firearms, 3rd Edition is 113 years old! It left the Winchester factory in 1906. The wood stock seems to have born the brunt of the rifle’s age the most. At some point, cracks formed in the stock and a repair job was carried out. The barrel retains a surprising amount of bluing, while naturally the receiver has little bluing left. Personally, this rifle is in far better condition than my Model 1890 which has no bluing left whatsoever. The bore is in excellent condition with no rust or pitting. Some powder residue is still present. It would be decent shooter though these rifles are somewhat hard to find ammo for. Winchester will produce the ammo on occasion. In any case, if you are a collector of Winchester rifles, the 1903 is a must have given its significance within the history of Winchester firearms as mentioned above.
