Description:
This is the second type Lee-Metford bayonet that measures 16 3/4" overall with an 12" straight, double-edged blade. The blade retains the original bright, factory polish, while the hilt fittings have been lightly cleaned to a dull pewter-gray patina. The ricasso is marked with “(crown ) / (V)R / 11 ’01 / SANDERSON SHEFFIELD" on the reverse and “(Broad Arrow) / (crown) / B / A8 / X" on the obverse. The hilt has a single forward swept quillon with disk finial, and lightly worn walnut, two-rivet grips and “N" marked (Royal Navy) pommel with functional latch stud. The bayonet comes with a worn but intact leather scabbard that has both blued metal throat and chape furniture. The leather is in very good overall, and the metal has some bright metal along the edges. This is a fine example of a desirable Lee-Metford bayonet with naval marking, and would make a great addition to a collection.
