Description:

AMERICAN REVOLUTION Prd. FLINTLOCK Militia Musket

Non-British Proofed Version of the Brown Bess!

Here we present an antique Revolutionary War Period Flintlock Musket, patterned after the British Brown Bess, made circa the 1770s. This large bore, full stock military musket would have been used by the “Minutemen” militia of the American Revolution. The Minuteman is possibly the most iconic image of the United States war for independence. These militias were comprised of civilian soldiers who were ready to defend their country at a minute’s notice. These militias were normallyanized and run by local “Committees of Safety”. These Committees of Safety often contracted with local gun makers to supply firearms to the local militia. These muskets varied widely in overall style but were normally copies of the British “Brown Bess” muskets with a mixture of both imported, domestically produced, and even scavenged parts. These American muskets were the first muskets ever “produced” for the infant United States military.

This musket, as mentioned above, was certainly patterned after the British Brown Bess, which makes sense logistically as most of the colonists for whom they were built were British or of British descent. Therefore, many of the colonists would have experienced making, maintaining, or using the weapon. There would have been no shortage of spare parts to be scavenged once the fighting started as well, making repairs a little easier on the already strained gun making industry in early America. The Brown Bess was also a proven weapon by this time, having already been in British arsenals for decades.

Some of this musket’s parts may have been produced in England, however, there are no British proof marks on the barrel and the musket is simpler than the standard British made guns, suggesting production or assembly elsewhere. The stock lacks the characteristic carved embellishments such as the fluting around the comb of the stock and the thumb plate at the top of the wrist was deleted from the design. The side plate is flat and flush with the stock. Then there are the makers’ markings on the metal parts. The side plate is stamped “GEB” on the underside. The exterior of the lock is marked “CO” between the legs of the frizzen spring. The top left of the barrel is marked with “SS”. And the underside of the barrel is deeply stamped with a heart and “PO”. This gun is a fantastic study and the former owner was certain that this gun was made for one of the Committees of Safety. The original Committee of Safety required contractors to mark their pieces with the maker’s initials or signature. This is a well-made gun and an excellent example of an American Revolutionary War musket!

The overall condition is near fine. The iron parts have a smoky gray patina. The brass, likewise, has turned from a bright yellow to a light brown with age. The markings are clear. The stock is smooth and solid. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action is excellent. A musket like this one is a true rarity!
