Description:
Scarce Antique COLT Model 1878 SxS Hammer SHOTGUN

Double Barrel Made in 1882 with Damascus Barrels

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun in 10 Gauge, manufactured in Hartford, Connecticut in 1882. The Model 1878 was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 guns manufactured. These double barrel shotguns were an exposed hammer double gun that competed closely with high-end Parkers. The Colt Model 1878 Double-Barrel Hammer Shotgun is considered to be, if not the finest, one of the finest American double-barrel shotguns ever made. The Model 1878 Shotgun was the highest priced item in the Colt line and was available in almost any grade as a special order item.

According to one source, “The Model 1878 Hammer Gun ranks among the best grade doubles produced in the entire American arms trade. The limited number completed and the great pains devoted to handling specific orders from often fussy shooters means that a considerable degree of quality and variety is evident in the Model 1878 series.”

This one was obviously used and kept running with that neat old repair along the wrist. The repair consists of two thick brass sheets screwed the entire way round. Brass was chosen for its malleability so that it would conform to the stock but also be strong enough to make the repair hold. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The bores are in very good condition, smooth and semi-bright. The actions remain strong. Here is a fantastic 10 gauge shotgun that would have taken many a duck or goose in the marsh, fantastic for mounting on the wall above the fireplace!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
