MARLIN Model 1897 Lever Action C&R TAKEDOWN Rifle
Blue with Casehardened Receiver In .22 Caliber!
Here we present a Marlin Model 1897 Lever Action .22 Rifle, made in 1903 in New Haven, Connecticut. This rifle had a production run from 1897 to 1922. John Mahlon Marlon, founder of the company, served as a machinist with Colt Patent Firearms of Hartford prior to starting his own firearm manufacturing company in New Haven in 1863, during the American Civil War, where he concentrated primarily on production of small, single shot .22 deringers.
This rifle sports a German silver blade front and sporting type rear sight, along with a full-length magazine. It has a smooth forearm and a straight grip stock with an iron forend cap. The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY”. The barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN CT USA”, followed by patent information. The tang of the receiver is marked “MODEL 1897”.
Overall condition is good. The blued steel parts have turned plum with age. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has been repaired at the wrist with a copper dowel that has been laid over—a bit of character. The bore is dark with thin rifling. The action is smooth and strong. Here is a rifle that very likely took many squirrels in its day!
