Description:
One of the most desirable and difficult to find rifle is an original, unaltered western shipped 1874 Sharps heavy rifle in the fabled "big 50" cailber.  This rifle is documented by an early letter from the late Dr. R.L. Moore, then owner of the original Sharps factory records.  The rifle was shipped on March 7, 1879 to N.Curry and Brother, San Francisco, California.  Curry was a known provider of buffalo guns to the various buffalo ranges to the east. This particular gun has features of a transition rifle between the Hartford guns and Bridgeport guns with a beveled Hartford type hammer nose but has a short half cock like a Bridgeport gun.  The barrel address is Sharps Rifle Company, Bridgeport, Conn. but is in the smaller font of a Hartford rifle and does not have the "Old Reliable" stamp that came a few months later.  The top of the barrel is lightly stamped "Calibre 50"and the right side of the barrel flat is stamped "2 1/2" which is barely visible due to wear.  The bore is fair to poor as it appears to have had thousands of rounds fired through it. Wood is sound with no breakage, left side of forearm shows wear consistent with using cross sticks for a rest.  Metal is a smooth grey brown patina with light pitting in several areas.  There is heavier pitting on the lock plate consistent with hand placement on the grip. Mechanically the rifle is excellent, set triggers, breech block and lock all work as they left the factory.  On my postal scale this rifle weighs 14 pounds 2 ounces. One of the amazing features of this rifle is the barrel, receiver, lock plate, trigger plate and extractor all have matching serial numbers.  Research done by the current owner of the Sharps factory records, Dr. Richard Labowski, indicates there were only 179 Sharps rifles that ever left the factory chambered for the 50-90 cartridge.  With the survival rate factored in, finding an original 50-90 Sharps is rare.  This rifle is sold as a non-shooting antique and can be shipped directly to the buyer in those states that still allow antique firearms.  It is the responsbiltity of buyer to ensure this rifle can be legally shipped to their location.  Shipping is a flat $200 and includes full value insurance and a hard case.  If you call please leave message and I'll call right back.  If you have questions or need additional photos please call or leave an email.  Thanks for looking.
