Description:
Offered for sale is this U.S. Model 1884 Springfield Carbine.  This is a true original carbine, not a firearm assembled by someone from spare parts or a cut-down rifle.  Based on the serial number (452689), this carbine was manufactured in 1888.  All parts are correct for a firearm manufactured in that year.  This carbine has a Model 1890 carbine rear sight protector barrel band.  These bands were installed on carbines already in inventory at that time or on those that were sent in for repair.  The rear Buffington sight is correctly marked with a “C” for a carbine.  The windage knob is stiff but operable.  The front sight is a fourth type as installed on carbines after 1886.  The firing pin is a bronze alloy, which is also correct for a post-1886 firearm.  This sale includes an original three-piece cleaning rod of the second type.  This carbine has been detail stripped and extensively refurbished.  Accordingly, there is no hundred+ year-old goop, grease, oil, or carbon to be found.  The stock has been deep-cleaned, given a fresh coat of boiled linseed oil, and further given a coat of Renaissance Wax for protection.  There is only one minor stock crack located on the front, left side near the barrel band.  Appearance-wise, the stock does have some scratches and dents (see photos).  All imperfections were not sanded out due to the fact that this stock has been previously refinished at some time or several times in the past.  The result is that the barrel band fits a little loose and the stock cartouche is no longer visible.  The metal has been re-blued using Pilkington’s rust bluing, the process originally known as “browning.”  This is not a cold bluing process. The metal has also been given a final thin coat of linseed oil, as was originally done by the Springfield Armory for protection.  The Springfield eagle on the lock plate is faint, but the words “U.S. Springfield can still be read.  The barrel has some small dents and exterior pitting that do not affect the function of the carbine.  Re-bluing does not remove these imperfections.  Screw and bolt heads are sharp with no or minimal rounding.  The bore has been extensively cleaned of all possible lead and black powder residue.  The rifling is good, but there is minor bore pitting as is common for old black powder firearms.  I have personally fired this carbine using period-correct .45-55-405 black powder cartridges without any problems.  Accuracy and shot groups are good out to 100 yards.  If you already have the correct black powder cartridges, this carbine is ready to go straight out of the box.  All questions will be promptly answered.  Thank you.
