Description:
1840s SOUTHERN Antique .40 Caliber Long Rifle

Dade & Raynolds of MOBILE AL Lock J. ASHLEY Barrel

Here we present a Southern Antique Half Stock Long Rifle by J. Ashley, made circa the 1840s in or around Mobile, Alabama. This rifle is equipped with a lock that is marked “DADE & RAYNOLDS”, who were lock makers out of Mobile, Alabama in the 1840s. The rifle’s maker at large signed the top of the barrel “J.ASHLEY”. This rifle would have been made to put food in the pot as well as protect the homestead. However, when the American Civil War started in earnest, this rifle very well may have been put to defense of more than just the homestead. Many Southerners were armed with what they had due to a great arms shortage that would last the entirety of the war. This rifle is of simple design, a true working implement. It is equipped with a part-octagonal, part-round barrel bored to .40 caliber.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are gray with age. The markings are clear. The stock is in very nice shape. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The action is excellent. This is a fine example of what those in the Antebellum South would have had around the homestead and an even better example of those civilian weapons which Southern individuals might have carried into battle. A rare and desirable piece of history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
