RARE Antique PALMER Bolt Action MUSKET CONVERSION

Mid-19th Century Breech-Loading Update!

Here we present an antique Palmer Bolt Action Conversion of a Musket in .42 Rimfire, made circa the mid-to-late 1800s. The Palmer Bolt Action Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, manufactured circa 1865 in Windsor, Vermont, was the first bolt action metallic cartridge firearm accepted by the U.S. Ordnance Department to be issued to the service. The Lamson Company delivered only 1,000 its contract for the Palmer carbine just as the war ended in June 1865 and the arm was never issued. Palmer also saw the potential to convert muskets to breech-loaders using the system like the Allin system eventually would. It is unclear how many conversions were undertaken in this fashion, and this is the only example we have yet observed.

This firearm has a bolt action operation that uses a short-handled bolt at the rear of the breech that when pulled back and opened, exposed the chamber for loading the rimfire round. There is also a hammer that has to be cocked, much like other breech-loading designs of the time such as the Spencer and Sharps rifles and carbines.

The only visible markings on the gun are on the Lawrence patent rear sight, like those found on the Sharps carbines. The front sight is a hooded post.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in good shape. The bore is in good shape with nice rifling. The action is strong. Here is a very neat example of a post-Civil War Palmer Conversion! The Palmer Carbines are rare, this one is rarer still!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 25-1/4 inches.

Caliber: .42 Rimfire
