Description:
The Models 721 and 722 are considered to be some of the first modern, economically produced sporting rifles, their design largely being continued with the following and highly successful Model 700. Manufactured with a high level of precision, the 722 it is known for exceptional accuracy. The bolt and receiver design, based on the Mauser ‘98 action, is considered one of the strongest ever produced. Examples in excellent condition have become very collectible in recent years. Both the 721 and 722 were introduced in 1948. The example shown here left the factory in 1953. It is chambered for the popular .257 Roberts. This cartridge is based on a wildcat that involved necking the 7x57mm Mauser down to .25-caliber. Later on, Remington introduced the .257 Roberts +P to take advantage of the already existing actions then available at the request of many in the market who understood the .257 to be underloaded. Manufactures, including Remington, had deliberately kept the pressure on the .257 Roberts low due to the number of older Mauser ‘91, ‘93, and ‘95 rifles that were being used to build custom rifles chambered for the .257. These rifles are not as strong as the later Mauser ’98 and Remington 721/722 rifles. All three of those models are structurally strong enough to use the .257 Roberts +P. This 722 is in good shape considering its age. The floor plate has some minor bluing loss as does the very tip of the muzzle, but overall the rifle retains 98 percent of its bluing. The bore is in excellent condition if a little dirty with some minor copper fowling. The rifle is equipped with period-accurate Weaver K-6 scope. This is a fixed 6-power scope. This 722 would make an excellent hunting rifle.
