.54 CALIBER Antique Half-Stock SMOOTHBORE “Rifle”
Original BUFFALO HUNTER Percussion Musket
Here we present an antique Half-Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s. This old smoothbore has a robust octagonal barrel with a .54 caliber bore and rifle sights. This would have been the sort of long gun a buffalo hunter or fur hunter might have taken West in the antebellum period. Interesting little nuances may be observed such as the frontier repair that this one saw when the lock appears to have been dislodged and the side plate or escutcheon was lost, and a couple small pieces of leather were used in its place on the left side. The leather is dark and stiff with age. There is a faint maker’s signature on the top of the barrel: “V. GA??”. There is a small 8-pointed star on the right side of the buttstock.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings are faint. The walnut stock is in fair to good condition with the obvious loss around the lock where this old gun experienced some trauma. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is not currently functional. A great piece of history!
