Description:
STEVENS ARMS & Tool Co. “IDEAL” No. 44 Rifle C&R

Early 20th Century Single Shot Falling Block Varmint Rifle!

Here we present a Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Ideal No. 44 Rifle, made around the turn of the 20th Century in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This rifle cannot be precisely dated since the Stevens factory records were burned in their entirety. Production began in 1894 and went on through 1916. This rifle is chambered in .22 LR Rimfire, a very effective cartridge for small game with minimal recoil. This rifle was manufactured right around the time that Stevens Arms & Tool Company was becoming the largest producer of sporting firearms in the world. By 1915, Stevens was a leader in the American arms business as a maker of target and small game hunting guns.

This rifle would have been great for small game and target shooting. It features a hefty part-octagonal, part-round barrel and adjustable sights. The top of the barrel is marked “J. STEVENS A&T CO./CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS U.S.A PAT.APR 17.94”. The left side of the barrel is marked “22 LR” for the cartridge it chambers.

The overall condition is fine. 98% of the original blue finish remains with virtually complete case colors on the receiver. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock is very smooth and certainly solid. The bore is bright with good rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is an Ideal that would be hard to improve upon!
