Description:
This is a very nice original Erfurt Luger made in 1913 for the German Military.  It is German unit marked on the front grip strap to "87.R.4.3", and is all-matching except for the take-down lever, which is un-numbered.  The unit marking is for the 87th Infantry Regiment, 4th Company, Weapon Number 3.  It comes complete with the original factory magazine which is numbered to the gun on the wood bottom base.  This particular Imperial German regiment saw a good deal of battle, serving first on the Eastern Front and later on the Western Front.  On the Eastern Front the 87th Infantry Regiment fought along the Polish frontier and in the Gorlice-Tarnów Offensive, seeing two major battles.  Later in WW1 after being moved to the Western Front in March of 1918, the 87th moved into front line duty in the Champagne region and later fought back Allied (American forces included) counterattacks in the Second Battle of the Marne.  It was likely on the Western Front where this Luger was captured by an American soldier and brought back to the States as a trophy.  As you can see from the pictures, this is an attractive Luger with lots of bright factory blue finish remaining.  It is an early production gun from 1913, before the stock lug became standard on the rear grip strap in late 1913 / early 1914.  The bluing shows some handling marks and finish wear but no eyesores or bad spots, only what you would expect to see on a WW1 combat-used pistol.  The original factory "straw" finish on the trigger, safety lever, magazine release, and ejector still shows some nice golden yellow color, particularly in the protected areas.  As mentioned earlier, all of the numbered parts including the grips and magazine are matching on this Luger except for the take-down lever, which appears to be an un-numbered replacement.  The bore is in good condition overall, showing nice strong rifling throughout but has some frosting in the grooves.  The original grips are in very good condition, with nice clean checkering and no major dings or damage.  All of the controls on this Erfurt are in perfect working order, and the toggle action is slick and locks up perfectly.  The original factory magazine appears to be in perfect working order as well, and is in very good condition overall with nice clear factory stampings on the wood bottom.  We have no doubt that this Luger would function just as reliably today as it did when it left the factory 106 years ago.  If you have been looking for a WW1 Luger for your collection that is good enough to be an investment but not too nice to shoot, this neat unit-marked 1913 Erfurt would be an excellent choice.
