Description:
#4875 Colt 1848 Third Model Dragoon revolver, 18XXX serial range, so likely made in 1860 or 1861. About 10,000 of this model were produced, but this is the much more scarce “cut for stock” variation that is often referred to by advanced collectors as the Fourth Model, being as it has the stock cut outs on the recoil shield, the little rear leaf sight, and the stock screw lugs. Only about 1500 of this variation were made but unfortunately, the stock has been a long time gone. Now this particular revolver appears to have NO military markings, no “U.S.” stamping under the Colts Patent on the frame, and no sub inspectors marks or grip cartouches, so it’s almost a certainly that it was a private militia or civilian purchase. It is completely matching including the loading lever and wedge, and looks to have had very, VERY little use. The finish is totally gone to an even grey patina, and the cylinder scene is about 65-70% intact due to some minor pitting in spots and there are no safety pins remaining. The rest of the metal also has very minor wear and light scattered pitting, most being on the barrel top around the address, but for a revolver that is 159 years old, it is in really great condition. If it had some finish, it would easily be Ex. Fine or better. The original walnut grips are also excellent and fit perfectly. The rear sight does have some blue remaining, so I suspect it could be a reproduction. The bore is about an 8 on a scale of 10, and mechanically it is excellent. Okay, that’s the good part, and here is the caveat. This Dragoon is SO GOOD, the scene is FAR above what one usually sees, and the metal and grips have virtually no significant wear, so it may have had some significant up-grading along the way. However, I cannot find anything that appears “wrong” (other than the rear sight finish). However I am not well-versed on Dragoons, so it would be wise to do your own research and come to your own conclusions so as to not waste your postage if you see anything in the many photos that looks incorrect that I may have missed. This is a really great gun at a great price for one of these massive “four pounders”, and I am also pricing it with the slim possibility that it may have had some upgrading. Otherwise if I was absolutely 100% positive it was really this good, it would easily be a $7500+ Dragoon. Near “Fine/Ex.Fine” as described. $5250.
