Description:
#4931 Winchester 1886 OBFMCB rifle in the very popular 45/70 caliber and scarce 28” barrel with a Fine bore (about an 8+ on a scale of 10) having just some darkening in the grooves which should clean much better. It was manufactured in 1894 (being in the 91XXX serial range) and having very crisp metal with just some very fine pepper pitting in some areas and moderate pitting on the front of the mag tube. It has reasonably decent wood with no significant wear or major blemishes aside of a name inscribed many years ago on the butt. However, what issues it does have are a chip at the heel of the stock, a partial linear crack on the left side of the comb, and some thin slivers at the top tang. Interesting, the name looks like it might be “Bobitt”, which (if you remember) was the name of the fellow who had his manly “member” whacked off by his hot-tempered wife! Admittedly, the inscribed butt stock marking looks to be MUCH older than the unfortunate Bobitt who got the lower body “reduction”. Now the fellow who I got this nice rifle from told me that when he bought it he was told that it had been rebored from a smaller caliber (….probably 38/56WCF, he thought) and this is no doubt why it has such a fine bore. It does have the correct “45-70” stamping on the barrel breech. Consequentely this 125 year old rifle will not be valued so much as being a “originality collectors rifle”, but rather valued for its shootability ……and so for a big game rifle or a “cowboy action shooter”, this should be the ideal rifle. VG++. $2395
