CIVIL WAR .50 CAL MAYNARD CARBINE
MANUFACTURED BY THE MASSACHUSETTS ARMS CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. JUST OVER 20,000 MADE. PERCUSSION BREECHLOADER SINGLE SHOT . 20” ROUND BARREL WITH OCTAGONAL SECTION  AT BREECH.  DESIGNED BY EDWARD MAYNARD. QUITE A FAVORITE WITH THE CONFEDERATES , AS ONE OF THEIR OFFICAL WEAPONS. 
                This IS A 1859 CARBINE ASSIGNED TO JAMES LITTLE OF CO. L 11TH NEW YORK CALVARY  THIS IS A SOLID CLEAN ORIGINAL WEAPON WITH GOOD BROWN ON THE BARREL  It showd years of wear and has heavy burn by the receiver and dark patina. On the right side of the butt are carved initials “j.L” in one inch letters. Just under these to the right is carved “11 NY” stamped into the top of the butt just above the buttplate are tiny characters “11 co. l” a search of the unit records finds only one possible match to these initials, Private  James  Little. Enlisted  at  age  36 Dec. 8 1863 to serve  three  years at New York City.  Appointed  Veterinary  Surgeon, April 13, 1865 Mustered out as supernumerary July 21 1865, at Memphis Tenn.
