Merkel shotguns from Suhl Germany demonstrate the famous German engineering, with strength and function always foremost in the design.  The 2001 EL is a graceful, lightweight game gun utilizing the Greener Crossbolt top fastener to give incredible strength and durability to this handsome OVER/UNDER shotgun.  The 2001EL is still being made today, with each action scaled to the gauge, milled from a solid billet of steel, and then each part hand-fit by an Old-World master gunmaker.  This model 2001EL was built in 1998 by Merkel with Luxus wood, hand engraved and signed by Werner Hoffman showing deep chiseled game scenes, and special attention to the smallest details.  Not all Merkel 2001EL guns were created equal, as most have moderately figured wood.  TAKE A LOOK AT THESE PHOTOS AND TAKE NOTICE OF THE DARK, FULL EXHIBITION TURKISH WALNUT THAT THIS GUN WAS ADORNED WITH.  Somebody either got lucky or knew someone in the factory, as this is the best wood you will ever see on a Merkel 2001EL.  Gun folks all love gorgeous wood and there is a great deal of value added to a gun with exhibition wood and a great deal of pleasure owning the gun as well.  Also note in the photos that the gun has a coating of dried oil on the action.  We wanted to get the gun up for sale as it is THE SEASON FOR BUYING UPLAND BIRD GUNS, so we did not service the gun before the photos.  We are presently stripping the receiver and forend iron to the smallest part, ULTRASONIC cleaning all, inspecting each part for function and integrity, then properly lubricating and reassembling, making this a VFI CERTIFIED GUN with a 90-day mechanical warranty.  The action and engraving will be clean and retains 99% plus factory original finish.  The barrels retain over 99% factory blue, as does the trigger guard.  The gun is still tight as new on the hinge pin and has barely been shot.  This gun comes with the original leather case, shipping box, and all the paperwork.  The gun is in near new condition with only a couple of handling marks.  You can buy a new Merkel 2001EL for about $12,000 in today’s world, and that is without the Maker’s case and with moderately figured wood.  This one can be had at a fraction of retail cost.  With its 26 ¾” IC/M fixed chokes, she weighs 6 1/2lbs. and balances dead on the hinge pin.  This is a dynamic handling shotgun for your upland hunts or sporting clays.  Priced to sell and destined to give you enjoyment for generations, it would be hard to find a better modern-day over/under gun value.  Thanks for looking!
