Early 19th Century Conceal Carry Gun
Here we present an antique J. Clay Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1820 in Birmingham, England. This type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. It could be stowed in the top of a boot, the belt, waistband or in a pocket. It was of course, made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Much happened in Britain, in its colonies and abroad during this period.
This specimen is marked “J. CLAY” and “LONDON” on the frame. Clay is known to have made flintlock pistols during the 1820s. The rifled barrel twists off, making loading a much easier task than jamming a ball down the muzzle. This allowed the shooter to use a larger diameter ball, creating a better gas seal for more efficiency from a small gun. The underside of the frame is proofed with post-1813 proof marks.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The wood grip is in good shape. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong and crisp.
