PITTSBURGH Antique .40 Caliber Heavy LONG RIFLE
Made Circa the 1860s with “Whitmore, Wolff, Duff & Co.” Lock
Here we present an antique Half-Stock Back Action Long Rifle, made circa the 1860s.
The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:
“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.
Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”
This rifle features a “Whitmore, Wolff, Duff & Co.” marked lock, along with a beautifully “Tiger Striped” maple hardwood stock. Whitmore, Wolff, Duff & Co. were hardware dealers out of the Steel City circa the late 1850s through the late 1870s at least. Double set triggers round out the package on this lovely Pennsylvania Rifle.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are gray with age with clear markings. The maple stock shows a thin strip along the top of left side of the fore end. There is also a crack at the screw on the left stock flat, which is a common area of weakness due to the weight of the barrel and brittle nature of maple. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. The hammer appears to be an old replacement. The action is strong and crisp. Here is a great example of a rifle that would have been indispensable for providing food for the table as well as protection on the American Frontier!
