Description:
VIRGINIA Marked American FLINTLOCK MILITIA Pistol

WAR of 1812 Period Virginia Marked Sidearm

Here we present an antique Virginia Militia Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1807. This pistol is large and made for fighting. It would have been most at home in a saddle holster but could have been worn in a belt as well. It features a .63 caliber bore in a round barrel of 12 inches that is pinned to the stock. The stock goes nearly to the muzzle and the pistol grip portion has 5 flat facets rather than the round grip that was most popular at that time. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature on this pistol is the “VIRGA” marking on the left stock flat. The left side of the barrel is Proof marked “P” inside an oval. This marking was typical of military contracts of the period with examples from Henry Deringer, Joseph Henry, Robert McCormick, and John Miles of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Thomas French of Canton, Massachusetts; Martin Fry of York, Pennsylvania; John Guest of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and Virginia Manufactory of Richmond, Virginia known. Many of these contractors were specifically working in and around 1807 and 1808, just prior to America’s second war with Britain, the War of 1812.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are bright. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in near fine condition for the age. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. This is a very rare piece, so marked, and an important piece of Virginian and American history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 12 inches.

Caliber: .62
