RARELY ENCOUNTERED HIGH CONDITION .22 SHORT, LONG OR LONG RIFLE SMOOTH BORE MODEL 6, SINGLE SHOT BOYS RIFLE WITH CASE COLORED RECEIVER AND TANG SIGHT, #S 358XXX, MADE 1902-1933. This is NOT simply a bored out barrel as it is clearly factory stamped by the breech “SMOOTH BORE.” I’ve only seen a couple of others so marked and chambered. Made for .22 Rim Fire Shot Cartridges and known as “Rat Guns,” “Barn Guns,” and “Garden guns,” these small and lightweight takedown rifles were rarely cared for and most were left in barns or behind the kitchen door for use against garden and barn pests. This is the best one I’ve seen and it is also an early example with case colored receiver- later guns had blued receivers. Surprisingly, it has the little stamped steel factory folding tang sight- why this would be needed on a .22 shotgun is odd, but it is there along with the correct small factory gallery rear sight with front blade/bead. The 20” smooth bore barrel has a matching serial number to the stock and retains about all the original blue. The little falling block action is tight and the bore is bright and excellent. The receiver retains nearly all the dark case colors (this is pretty much the way they all left the factory) and even the butt plate retains almost all of the original blue. Excellent nicely figured walnut stock and forend retain nearly all the original finish. It looks like this one was never used…just put away and stored for the last hundred or so years! Would be hard to find a better one!
