Description:
EARLY, SIGNED Winchester 1887 LEVER ACTION Shotgun

2nd Year 12 Gauge Antique Lever Action Shotgun

Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun, made circa 1888 in New Haven, Connecticut, Signed by Leonard Harry Black. This model saw just under 65,000 made. These guns were designed by the famous John Moses Browning and are considered the first successful lever action shotgun. They were fast eclipsed by pump action shotguns but were a tremendous upgrade in firepower to the standard double barrel of the time. They came in both 10 and 12 gauges, and full lengths of 30-32 inch barrels and “riot” length of 20 inches. The riot length version is considerably scarcer. This would have been a great gun for upland birds or waterfowl.

This one is signed “Leonard H. Black” on the receiver and “Black” under the magazine tube. Leonard Black was a veteran of the Great War and was with the American Expeditionary Forces in France as a Private late in the war. He returned to his home in Verdel, Nebraska to operate his own general store. He was commander of American Legion “David R. Morgan” Post 223 as well as an Odd Fellow. He was known for his love of the out of doors, hunting and fishing.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts bear strong traces of blue finish with an even gray patina throughout. The markings are clear. The walnut panels on the barrel and magazine tube are in great shape. The butt stock has been sanded down and remains smooth and solid. The bore is heavily frosted throughout. The action remains excellent, strong and crisp.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
