Description:
Rare PATENT INFRINGEMENT .22 Revolver by MANHATTAN

Engraved & Very Similar to Smith & Wesson No. 1!

Here we present an antique Engraved Manhattan Arms Pocket Revolver, First Model in .22 Rimfire, made in Newark, New Jersey circa 1860. This small, 7 shot .22 revolver was very similar to the successful Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue Revolver, S&W’s flagship revolver at the time. Manhattan Firearms Mfg. Co. made direct and quality copies of the S&W pistol without any regard to their patent infringement. Arguably, the Manhattan is the better of the two. Eventually, however, Smith & Wesson and the patent inventor, Rollin White, successfully sued for infringement and ended production of this revolver until about 1869. Interestingly, Manhattan was also famous for its blatant copies of Colt’s patents. In some ways, this is not terribly different than what goes on today in the firearms industry. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

This rare example is engraved on the barrel with floral scroll, and the bottom of the grip frame is engraved so the texture is almost matte, as one may see from time to time on the top of a barrel rib. The frame has the full and rounded look with the round brass side plate. Silver plate remains throughout the frame.

The overall condition is fine. The barrel has a bright appearance, while the frame retains 80% of the silver plate finish. The markings and engravings are clear. The rosewood grips are in fine shape. The bore is dark with good rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a rare little Manhattan that was limited not by its design or quality, but by timing!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/8 inches.

Caliber: .22 Rimfire
