Description:

Early ANTEBELLUM COLT Model 1849 POCKET Revolver

Made in 1852 with Stagecoach Robbery Scene

Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, made in 1852 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw much use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time.

Though not a primary military arm during the American Civil War, handguns were commonly privately purchased by soldiers for use on the battlefield. Whether legend or fact, it is interesting to note something commonly read about pocket revolvers of the day: that while they could be used for self-defense against the enemy, many soldiers kept them on their person to defend themselves against an unwanted amputation in the primitive field hospitals that were notorious, even in their day.

The barrel legend reads “ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY”.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear a uniform dark patina. About 10% of the silver plate remains on the brass grip frame. There is a small crack in the trigger guard bow. The markings are clear. The cylinder scene is still quite visible. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips show period wear and are in good condition. The bore is clean with very nice rifling. The action is excellent. A wonderful, well-loved Colt Model 1849 made in 1852!
