Description:
Scarce and highly coveted transition era model 70 in the king of all calibers 30-06. S/N 70*** with matching scribed bolt made in 1947. 24" barrel with an excellent bore. Mechanics are also excellent. Scalloped base Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight with matching # parts and a Redfield filler plug in the barrel dovetail. Overall condition is excellent with great eye appeal, rating about 98% Blue, 96% Varnish. These "transition rifles" as they are now known were offered for only a few years (1946-1948) immediately succeeding WWII. They are certainly among the very most desirable of any variation produced and can be quite difficult to obtain. Many are technically Pre War guns due to being factory assembled from 100% Pre War components. Most however, will have some characteristics of Pre War guns, such as the "cloverleaf" or "doll's head" shaped receiver tang, early stamped components, etc. along with the very cool and uniquely shaped safety lever often referred to as a "rabbit's foot" or "clamshell" safety which is exclusive to this brief production period only. The most notable changes that would carry on through the remainder of Pre-64 production were the now smooth topped rear receiver bridge (unmatted) which was factory drilled for scope mounts (with very few exceptions), subtle changes to bolt handle profile, and hot blued barrels instead of rust blued. This listed rifle is truly a fine representative Model 70 of a highly desirable and collectible era!
