After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War. This specimen is marked “U.S./MODEL/1878” on the breech block. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The left side of the stock bears the inspector cartouche “SWP/1883”, representing Chief Ordnance Inspector Samuel W. Porter and the circle “P” is located behind the trigger guard. The overall condition is near fine. 87% blue finish remaining. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows use and remains in very good condition. The bore is near fine, clean, bright, with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a very nice US government issue rifle from the Indian Wars-era! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32-5/8 inches.
