Description:
This Colt Single Action started life in 1883 as a U.S. Cavalry model with a 7.5" inch barrel in .45 Colt that was inspected by the U.S. Military inspector David F. Clark.  After serving the U.S. Military in that configuration for a number of years it was sent back to Colt and converted to an Artillery model (5.5" inch barrel) in the late 1890's.  Colt took these Cavalry models and stripped them down, cleaned them up, replaced any broken or worn parts, and rebuilt them with cut-down or new 5.5" inch barrels.  No attention was paid to keeping the serial numbered parts together so these guns are almost universally mis-matched.  After the Colt Single Action was replaced in service these guns were sold off to the surplus commercial market.  This particular example is serial number 92949 and it has been nickle plated at some point post-military service.  As you can see from the pictures, it shows lots of little handling marks and dings under the plating but still has a good look to it.  The original factory stamps are still visible to varying degrees, although the barrel address is extremely faint.  The bore in this Colt is good to average, with nice strong rifling but some scattered light pitting.  The six cylinder bores are in good condition.  The grips on this Colt are "2nd Generation" grips but fit nicely and are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs.  This Colt originally would have had a 1-piece Walnut grip.  The action on this Artillery is in good working order and "in time" whether you work it fast or slow.  All 3 hammer positions are still intact, and the trigger breaks nicely with a medium weight pull.  This Colt should be a great "shooter" in addition to being an investment piece for your collection.
