Description:
RARE and very nice, Antique Colt Frontier Six Shooter revolver, 44/40 cal.with original nickel finish, 4 3/4" barrel, and factory letter. The frame, triggerguard, and back strap were produced in 1883, but, not shipped out until 8 years later in 1891, as a civilian revolver!! This is one of the very few government "Overrun" revolvers produced by utilizing left over frames and other parts, from gov't contracts, for production on civilian  revolvers. (See pg. 277 in The study of the Colt single action army revolver, by Kopec, Graham, and Moore).  This gun has all the correct features and markings for a 1891 shipped gun, including the roll die "Colt Frontier Six Shooter" marking on the barrel. There is still a lot of original nickel finish on this gun, all markings are clear and very nice, screws are nice with some original finish remaining. The mechanics are excellent,  and the bore is very good. All serial #'s match. The D.F.C. inspector marking on the frame above the serial # is faint, but, still mostly visible. (see pic). This gun also has the very scarce, "Eagleless Eagle", or "High Horse" grips produced only for a very short time in the 1891 period, the year this gun was shipped as a civilian revolver. This are no serial numbers inside the grips, but, they fit very well, and are period correct, for the shipping date of 1891. Very nice, and original condition, rare variation of a Colt black powder revolver! Includes factory letter. Please ask questions if desired. NO FFL required, unless the state you live in requires one for transfer. Shipping is $35.00, which includes insurance to the lower 48 states.
