Description:
This is a very good early example of the Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver.  It has the standard 4" octagon barrel, 5 shot .31 caliber cylinder, and the small 1850's era trigger guard.  No other Model Colt surpassed the Model 1849 in production numbers during the 19th Century with just over 340,000 manufactured between 1850-1873.  The pocket model proved to be quite popular during the California Gold Rush in the 1850's . This one is in the 102,000 serial range and was produced in the early part of 1855.  By the outbreak of the Civil War, Colt had produced nearly 200,000 with another 75,000 built by the War's end in 1865.  The 1849 was likely the most common privately owned personal carry weapon of the Civil War.  The photographic evidence of these little Colts in the hands of Union and Confederate Soldiers posing in Ambrotypes and Tintypes is overwhelming.  This Colt has the early 2 line New York Address with 100% matching numbers.  This includes the frame, trigger guard, backstrap, cylinder, arbor pin, loading lever, wedge, and barrel.  See photos.  The roll engraved cylinder scene depicting an man armed with his Colt defending his woman in a stagecoach against a group of bandits is 95% sharp and discernable.  The metal has turned to an overall soft grey patina with good traces of original blue under the barrel and a few specks out on the flats if you look close enough.  The frame has some silvered out case colors with the balance turned to patina.  Original varnish remains on the original 1 piece walnut grips at around 60% with the balance worn from what appears to be handling and holster wear.  No cracks or repairs. The action works nicely.  Rear of cylinder still has some of the safety pins...these are usually worn off after 160 years.  Barrel to frame is tight.  The bore was quite dirty when we got this one and we've cleaned it up to a solid Fair+ to Good- and I still believe there is a little more room for improvement.  The rifling is all there with no rings or bulges.  It has some light pits which is typical of black powder guns from this era.  Markings and serial numbers are all sharp and legible.  Brass trigger guard still shows 50% of its original silver plating with 20% remaining on the backstrap.  If you're looking to acquire the most popular revolver of the 19th century, this little 1849 would make a nice addition to your collection and is in above average condition compared to most we've seen.
