Description:
This is a scarce US Cavalry Model 1912 Entrenching Shovel and picket pin issued to the entire first Cavalry and one squadron each of the 3rd, 5th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th. This multi-purpose tool was developed by the Cavalry Equipment Board in 1912 and put into production in 1914. The handle is a picket pin with a claw hammer in the end for use as a shoeing hammer and clinching iron in emergencies along with tethering horses. This is secured to the shovel body with a split pin and metal chain. These tools were issued with both canvas and leather tool carriers. This example is in very good to excellent condition with much of the original black painted finish remaining with several small scrapes and chips throughout. The shovel is marked “17 A" and “45". The canvas tool carrier marked “RIA 1910" and “G" is in very good condition with sound stitching with the leather strap and buckle fully intact. A great example of this scarce multi-tool.
