Description:
Serial #82531, .44-40, 20" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is an 1898-made rifle that has retained 50-60% of the original blue finish that blends seamlessly into a plum-brown patina. Additionally, there is mild silvering at the muzzle, along the exposed edges and bearing surfaces, and on the left side of the frame from contact with the saddle ring. Extensive British proofs are present on the left side of the barrel breech, and “(crown) / V" view proof is stamped on the left side of the frame. The forend retains its original dark varnish finish with comparatively few handling marks, and the buttstock likewise has scattered small handling marks and blemishes marring the original varnish. The buttplate retains a small amount of the original bright blue on the tang, while the comb of the stock has an old stress crack just visible. The crack follows the wood grain, and does not flex. An old brass inventory tag is affixed to the saddle ring, and the action functions flawlessly. This is a very nice, British proofed, Medium Frame Lightning SRC, and rates fine condition overall.
