Description:

1850s NEW YORK Antique A.W. SPIES Double Rifle

A Sophisticated, Versatile & Ornate Rifle!

Here we present an antique A.W. Spies Side by Side Double Rifle, made circa the 1850s in New York. Spies was a prolific arms dealer located in New York during this period. This rifle features a .48 caliber rifled bore on the left and a .54 caliber smooth bore on the right. The side by side barrels begin octagonal and transition at the midpoint to round. Each barrel has its own front and rear sight. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers and A.W. Spies marked twin locks. Interestingly, the smoothbore barrel on the right is operated with a single pull of the front trigger, while the rifled barrel on the left must be operated by setting the rear trigger, then pressing the front trigger. This would have been a very versatile weapon for the Frontier or hunting in general due to the ability to have a rifled bore next to smooth. The smooth bore could have been loaded with a .54 caliber ball for a quick follow up shot on dangerous game, shot for hunting multiple animals on the same outing, or buck ‘n’ ball for serious defensive use.

The attractive striped maple stock has a shotgun style to it since there are the two barrels mounted side by side. Curiously, each side of the butt stock has an integrally carved cheek rest, each decorated with an escutcheon shaped like a stag on one side and a spread eagle on the other. Scroll engraving on the lock plates.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The stock is in good shape. The bores are in very nice shape, smooth and reflective on the right and well-rifled on the right. The action is excellent. Here is a rifle that made its original owner the envy of his friends!
