#4297xx. This (approx) 1946 Savage 99 rifle made in Utica, NY shows little signs of use to speak of, with marks more consistent with infrequent fondling than hunting. The case colors on the lever are brilliant with a little sign of cycling of the action. The end of the barrel hasn't been rubbing in a scabbord or guncase, or sitting against the floorboards in somebodies truck. The buttplate is about 80% with some pitting. The receiver doesn't have any thinning from carry and only the slightest edge wear on the high points. The screws aren't buggered and I have no reason to believe this isn't a matching numbers rifle, although I will stop short of opening it up to verify that with 100% certainty. The checkering is sharp with only minor blemishes, the bluing has a few minor marks including a scratch on one side of the reciever about 3/4" long. The wood has no visible cracks or extra holes. Metal has no extra holes. Bluing is original. Wood finish appears original as well, with scattered handling marks.
Included is a Lyman Alaskan scope, magnification unknown, mounted in no-drill Stith mounts. Scope has a fine crosshair and a dot and is not as clear as modern glass, but definitely usable as-is. Firearm has not been function tested by us but appears to be a very low use firearm that I'm betting performs just as designed.
Overall a hard to find original rifle in very good shape.
