Description:
The Snider breech-loading conversion was a stop-gap measure used by the British Military as well as the Canadians to modernize their cap & ball muzzle-loading 1853 Model Enfields.  This allowed them to use the vast stocks of Enfields on hand to save money as well as modernize their main battle arm to be a match to other armies fielding cartridge rifles.  The Snider rifles were made in several models including a 3-band rifle, a 2-band short rifle, and a couple of carbine models.  These arms were converted and built with whatever parts were on-hand and vary greatly in the small details.  This was the case until the Snider Mark III was built as weapon from scratch rather than a conversion.  This particular example is a scarce Mark II** 2-band carbine, which was built from an 1853 Model Enfield dated 1856 on the lockplate by the B.S.A. Co. (Birmingham Small Arms Company).  It is a very nice example of it's type and as you can see from the pictures, has a very handsome look to it.  This Snider carbine has a 3-groove barrel that measures a little over 21.5" inches long.  It features the Snider-designed rotating breech plug conversion, an elevation-adjustable ladder-style rear sight, a saddle ring sling bar on the left side of the action, a brass triggerguard and buttplate, a barrel-mounted bayonet lug on the right side of the barrel, and 2 barrel bands (one early style band with exposed screw, one later style band with inset screw).  This Mk.II** Snider 2-band Carbine has an excellent bore and appears to be in perfect working order.  The action opens, slides, and closes properly, and the hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock notches in working order.  The original stock is in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The right side of the buttstock even still has a nice clearly legible inspector's cartouche from Enfield on it.  If you have been looking for a neat new addition to your antique arms collection this Snider Mk.II** Carbine would be an excellent choice.  These carbines do NOT come around very often, much less as clean and functional as this one!
