Description:
This is a VERY interesting piece with a very neat history.  This a Sino-Japanese War / World War 2 vintage officer's dagger for the Chinese Nationalist Air Force or ROCAF (Republic of China Air Force).  These daggers were issued and approved for wear in 1937 thru 1945 for officers only.  There were many various makers of this dagger in China and the quality of contruction varied significantly.  This particular example appears to be one of the better-made examples when examining the fittings.  What makes this dagger particularly interesting is that we acquired it from a U.S.M.C. veteran who received it as a gift from his Gunnery Sargeant, whom took it off of a dead N.V.A. officer in Vietnam during the Battle of Hue in 1968.  The dagger was being used as a fighting/combat knife at that point and was tucked into his belt, with the once bright nickel-plated blade having been ground down and sharpened on both edges by the NVA officer.  The Chinese Nationalist Air Force fought the Japanese over French Indo-China (Vietnam) during the Sino-Japanese War and World War 2 so it is certainly not a mystery how it ended up in that part of the world, what is a mystery is how the NVA Officer acquired it.  As you can see from the pictures, this dagger has obviously been well-cared for over the years, it most certainly was a prized possesion of everyone whom owned it at one point or another.  I would imagine that this fancy ornate dagger would have been a source of pride for both the original Chinese officer/pilot that originally owned it and the N.V.A. Officer that carried it in Vietnam.  When you consider the very plain and basic equipment of the N.V.A. forces in particular, this dagger would have really been a special piece of equipment to that officer.  As you can see from the pictures provided, this dagger is 100% complete and original and it retains a very nice aged patina on the brass fittings.  All of the engraved and cast details are still nice and visible on the handle and fittings.  The bird on the handle is beautiful with lots of detail in the feathers and head, with red bead eyes still intact on both sides.  Inside of the bird, the handle is comprised of fabric covered in a clear cellulose covering with five 3-strand wire wraps on it.  All of the wire is still there and intact, with the top three wraps tight and the bottom two slightly loose.  The brass crossguard is in good condition, tight to the dagger, and still has the original leather pad in place.  As mentioned earlier, the blade itself has been turned into a fighting dagger with almost all of the original plating ground off and both edges sharpened.  The scabbard is fully intact and in good condition.  Both the decorative brass throat and tip are still in place, and the metal scabbard body is solid and free from any dents or cracks.  All in all this is a very cool dagger with an even cooler history.  This Vietnam-captured Chinese Nationalist Air Force Officer's dagger would be an excellent addition to any militaria collection, and will fit nicely into both a WW2 and Vietnam War collection.
