Description:
This is an early Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine in the 38,000 serial range in Caliber 30 WCF.  It has the NICKEL STEEL ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER marking on the barrel, early 2 line barrel address in the 12 o'clock position, and early 3 line Maker, Model, and August 21, 1894 original Browning patent date located on the upper tang.  The hammer has the early style checkering with the decorative dipped border.  Correct Early rear sight has 200-900 yard graduations with no "1873" at the top which was taken off the top of the ladder in 1892.  The early walnut wood is super nice for a carbine with only a few handling marks.  The receiver has aged to a smooth grey patina with sharp edges and markings with 5-10% original blue under the saddle ring and in protected areas.  Traces of original fire blue on the loading port.  The hammer also has a little bit of faded case colors.  The barrel has about 30% original blue while the magazine tube has faired slightly better at around 60% original blue.  Nice bore and action cycles with half and full cock on the hammer.  Screws are all in good serviceable shape.  Nice example of a Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine with one of those very hard to find antique Pre-1898 Serial Numbers.  In early production, rifles were produced in much greater quantities than carbines.  Later on, the ratio flipped with carbines outnumbering the rifles until rifles were discontinued around 1930.  As most carbines were purchased to be used as tools, its tough to find ones that thread the needle being antique and in presentable condition.  The Model 1894 was perhaps the greatest deer rifle ever made but it was also exported all over the world and used for a variety of tasks that went far beyond hunting.  The Texas Rangers used them as did thousands of Mexican Revolutionaries in the early 20th century.  Even the US Army and the French Army purchased thousands of carbines during the First World War.  The fact that the 1894 is still being produced today is testament to the genius of its inventor, John Browning.
