Waters or Robert Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Percussion Pistol, made in 1844. This pistol would have started out as a flintlock and had a period conversion as the new technology developed. There were actually two manufacturers of these guns: Asa Waters and Robert Johnson. And, due to wear on the lock, I am unable to tell which individual manufactured this particular gun. Combined, the production totals 41,000 guns. This was the last U.S. martial pistol to use the flintlock system, and many consider this the best of all U.S. flint guns due to its craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal. The gun is historically significant as this was the primary issue pistol during the Mexican American War (1846-1848), and was even significantly used during the American Civil War (1861-1865), especially in the percussion converted format. The lock plate is roll-stamped "US/1844". The left stock flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspectors and final inspectors marks which consist of the script initials with oval borders. Many of these were lost to attrition during the various conflicts listed above, and many were converted for use, as is this one, by the North & South during the Civil War. The overall condition is good. The steel parts wear an old nickel finish, suggesting it was used long after it was deemed obsolete by the military. The markings are legible. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. There is a small chip at the back of the lock and a thin crack from the screw opposite the lock. The bore is smooth and dark. The action remains strong. Here is a very neat pistol that was made during the Mexican-American War and was likely used long past the American Civil War! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .54 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
