Description:
This Winchester Model 1904 single-shot rifle is chambered in ".22 Extra Long", the original name of the .22 Long Rifle cartridge which dates this example to post-1914.  The Winchester Model 1904 was introduced in the year 1904 as an improved version of the Model 1902.  This single-shot rifle features a 21" inch round barrel in a smooth American Walnut stock.  As menitoned earlier, these rifles were initially chambered for only .22 short and .22 long until 1914 when .22 Long Rifle was added.  They were never serial numbered and were in production until 1931, with somewhere around 300,000 produced during the 27 year production run.  This example is an all-original gun that is in perfect working order.  While the original blue finish on the exterior has turned to a gray/brown patina, the bore is near perfect!  The rifling still looks sharp and pristine, and the bore is free from any pitting, erosion, dents, bulges, or imperfections of any kind.  We rarely encounter these rifles with good bores much less excellent bores due to the widespread use of black powder cartridges still in circulation when this rifle was made.  Almost every example we get looks like this on the outside however, as these little rifles were often used hard and often by young shooters who didnt practice the best cleaning habits after use.  It really is extraordinary to find one with a nice original bore that hasn't be re-lined.  The original factory iron sights are still in place on this Model 1904 and in good condition, and the action itself is in perfect working order.  The original bolt is still nice and tight in the reciever but turns into battery perfectly, smoothly with no slop.  The stock on this little Winchester is solid and original, but shows lots of small dings, dents, scratches, etc., that are consistent with the wear on the rest of the rifle.  All of the original stock hardware is intact including the buttplate, triggerguard, and original knurled attachment screw that secures the action to the stock.  All in all this little Winchester Model 1904 is a nice example of this popular turn-of-the-century single-shot rimfire rifle.  It would not only make a nice addition to any early American gun collection but would also make an excellent shooter.  We have no doubt that this rifle would be just as reliable and accurate today as it was 100 years ago.
