Description:

Purchased from the Old Fort Sumner Museum in New Mexico several years ago.  See also my Winchester M1866 Carbine offered in this sales forum.  This Colt SAA in exceptionally nice condition with no problems.

This Colt has matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap.  In this serial range, Colt did not add partial serial numbers to barrels or cylinders, as their improved dimensional quality control standards made this unnecessary.  The gate number 2638 also appears on the underside of the frame, as gates required individual hand fitting.  The gun cocks crisply and locks up with unusual tightness, almost as if a new gun.  When hammer is drawn back slowly, the cylinder rotates until the lock bolt pops into its lock notch entry groove.  Continuing to draw the hammer to full cock advances the cylinder into its lock-up position.  One evidence of proper timing is that no unsightly drag line is seen on the cylinder as caused by early falling of the lock bolt.  Both the safety and half cock notches are functional (not broken) and in the correct places, so this hammer needs no re-building.  I can guarantee that 90% of the Colt SAA listings on the internet have mechanical problems, but the seller won't tell you that.  So in general, look for $250 worth of repairs and six months waiting for the return of your gun!

All markings are deep and clear, including the serial numbers, barrel address, patent dates, circled rampant Colt, “45 Colt” on side of barrel, and factory inspector marks.  The left rear trigger guard bow is also stamped “T”, which some believe is an indication of Targeting (aligning sights) on Colt’s firing range.

This gun’s surfaces range from a smooth light gray to generous traces of original blue, resulting from long use with a holster without any signs of abuse.  The cylinder retains about 5% blue (in the flutes), the barrel 10 to 15%, ejector housing 30%, trigger guard 5%, and backstrap 2%.  The backstrap and trigger guard screws retain much original fire blue, and have decent screw slots (only showing minor distortion from a screw driver).  The frame and hammer case colors have faded, leaving shades of medium to dark gray, and some silvery areas that result from aged original case hardening.

The cylinder lock slots are sharp (not rounded from abuse), with all cylinder panels being smooth medium gray.  See the one picture that shows all six cylinder panels in high resolution.  The rear of this cylinder is smooth gray, and the front face shows only light even porosity.  Chambers are generally smooth and clean (pictures show grease left inside after a thorough cleaning).  The expected forward and backward play between cylinder and rear of barrel is minimal (about 0.015”), and requires no corrective action.

The bore has strong lands and grooves, generally shiny, with only small areas of extremely light even porosity.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this one a superior 9 bore condition.  The steel front sight remains in its original 0.52” wide x 0.29” tall configuration, and retains 90% original bright blue.  The ejector head is perfectly straight and fits nicely to the underside of barrel.  Under the cylinder pin is a tiny “45”, marked for bore size, which was a factory practice to aid the assemblers.  The cylinder pin itself is a new replacement, retaining 100% blue.

The incredibly-fine grips retain sharp checkering, and fit perfectly almost as if original.  However, these grips were installed to replace the original set, which were broken on both sides as displayed in the museum.  These fine grips, themselves easily worth $450 alone, are accordingly numbered “5351” inside from some original installation.

All other screws in this gun are the originals, and each is way-above-average as for having sharp slots free of previous screw-driver damage.

The Colt Factory Letter Confirms 45 Colt, 5-1/2", Blue, Stocks Not Listed, and Shipped to Belknap Hardware & Manufacturing Co., Louisville, KY on April 15, 1907, one of 2 Guns.  The “Stocks Not Listed” entry simply means that the grips were the standard type used at the time (Hard Rubber).  This letter from Colt cost $150.  [Note: The Belknap Hardware & Mfg Co. was a wholesale hardware supply company established in 1840.  They began by producing iron products such as horse and mule shoes, nails, and spikes in a small shop.  After 1890 their catalog exhibited a line of sporting goods including guns, ammunition, holsters, baseball equipment, saddles, and tools made by other manufacturers, eventually exceeding 75,000 items].

In some cases, I can ship directly to a C&R licensed individual.  Otherwise, this Colt must be shipped to an FFL dealer of your choice.
