Description:

EARLY, ENGRAVED Edward London Percussion Revolver

Unique & Beautiful Addressed to 51 London Wall!

Here we present an antique Double Action Percussion Revolver by Edward London, made circa the 1840s at 51 London Wall in London, England. Edward seems to have come from a family line of gun makers who lived and did business at London Wall, an ancient wall built by the Romans to help protect Londinium from native Britons. By this time the city had expanded all around the wall and much of it was demolished to make room for other structures. This part has stayed. Census records show that Edward was active at this address from at least 1841-1861. Court records show that another Edward London, almost certainly his father or grandfather, lived at London Wall and gave testimony in a case in 1734.

This revolver is a unique example of British firearms technology as the maker tried to create an effective repeating sidearm. This pistol is quite similar to pepperboxes of the same period, though this one had the benefit of a single barrel with a cylinder as well as a spring-loaded loading plunger. Future revolvers would come similarly equipped. Pepperboxes were effective with their barrel clusters, essentially a massive and long cylinder, but could tend to be heavy as a result. Neither did they have any mounted equipment with which to reload.

This revolver is also comes equipped with a cap trap in the bottom of the grip. The sighting system is interesting too as the front bead would normally be obscured by the raising of the double action bar-hammer if not for the small window milled in near the rear. While a clever solution, in reality this was more likely to be a point and shoot weapon. For reloading and using the plunger the hammer can be lifted by a partial pull of the trigger and stood on top of a small, spring-loaded block to the left of the hammer, allowing the cylinder to free wheel. Another partial or full pull of the trigger releases the block out of the way so that the gun is back in battery. The revolver is elegantly engraved throughout, including the frame, grip frame, trigger guard, tip of the loading plunger, and hammer. The top of the barrel is marked “E. LONDON 51 LONDON WALL LONDON”. Each chamber is numbered 1-6 and each is London proofed.

The overall condition is very good. The finish is bright. The markings are clear and legible, including the engraving. The original grips are in great condition with fine checkering. The bore is very good, clean with sharp rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a very scarce example of an early British revolver by Edward London!
