Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique Remington ZOUAVE Rifle Musket

Only 12,501 Made for Union Army 1863-1865

Here we present an antique Remington Zouave Model 1863 2-Band Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 in Ilion, New York. Only 12,501 of these rifles were made on contract by Remington. These were also known as the “Harper’s Ferry Pattern” in official government parlance during the war. These were shorter rifles with thicker barrels than the mass-issued Springfield Models 1861 and 1863, of which millions were issued by the end of the American Civil War.

This Model 1863 features brass hardware, including the patchbox on the right side of the butt stock. The stout barrel is secured by two barrel bands. The lock is marked with a federal eagle and “REMINGTON’S/ILION, N.Y.” along with the date “1863”. The same date is present on the top of the barrel along with the standard federal view and proof marks. Left side of barrel is marked “STEEL”. Inspector’s initials “R.K.A.” are also present, which stand for Remick K. Arnold. The barrel is also equipped with a lug for the long saber bayonet.

The overall condition is good. The barrel retains 20% of the original blue finish with a dark patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has been repaired around the wrist. The bore is in good shape with clear 7-groove rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very affordable example of one of the best and scarcest muskets of the American Civil War!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.

Caliber: .58 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
