Introduced in 1978, the Taurus Model 66 was the firm's top-of-the-line .357 Magnum double-action revolver. Taurus borrowed design elements from Colt, Smith & Wesson, and several Spanish made guns in creating the Model 66. The Model 66 quickly earned a reputation for being an economical but reliable and accurate revolver. Taurus has kept the Model 66 in almost constant production ever since, with many little changes and variations being introduced along the way. This particular Taurus Model 66 was made in the early 1980's and shows a much higher degree of fit and finish than later production guns. This Model 66 came from the factory with a high gloss blue finish on all of the steel parts except for the trigger and hammer, which were finished in a golden yellow "straw" finish. It features a 6" inch pinned barrel, a 6-shot cylinder with recessed chambers, adjustable target-style sights, and checkered Walnut "Target" grips. The pinned barrel and recessed chambers is a very sought-after feature on Smith & Wesson revolvers that Taurus copied on their gun during this period. The original blue finish on this gun shows some minor handling marks and spots of finish wear, but still has a very attractive look overall. The bores in both the barrel and cylinder are in excellent condition. The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves throughout the barrel and there is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections. The six chambers in the cylinder are all equally as clean. The original "straw" finish on the trigger and hammer still shows a lot of bright color but does show some minor finish wear in spots. The original factory grips are in good condition overall and free from any cracks, chips, major damage, or repairs. They do show some minor wear and handling marks consistent with the rest of the gun. Both grip panels are perfectly fit to the gun and tight to the frame with no wiggle. The action on this vintage Taurus is extremely smooth and perfectly "in time", whether it is worked fast or slow, double or single action. You can tell that these guns were definitely hand-built and hand-tuned at the factory, a practice long abandoned these days. All of the controls on this Model 66 are in perfect working order and this revolver should shoot just as reliably and accurately now as the day it left the factory. If you have been looking for an affordable but well-made and attractive .357 Magnum revolver for your collection this vintage Taurus Model 66 would be an excellent choice.
