Nice example of an Engraved Whitney No. 1 Pocket Revolver. It is marked "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY CT. USA" on top flat of Octagon Barrel. The frame, barrel, and cylinder are engraved in the style of LD Nimschke. Nimschke's shop was located in New York and he and his apprentice engravers turned out a lot of engraving throughout the 1870's for all the major manufacturers from Colt to Winchester as well as all the large New York-based dealers. The large winding floral vignettes with punch dot reliefs on the left and right side of the frame as well as the star and intertwined motif on the backstrap are classic textbook Nimschke patterns. Not only that, but those particular areas of this revolver were done by a person of great skill...the quality you'd expect to find on a factory engraved 1866 Winchester rifle....perhaps by Nimschke himself. The barrel and some of the smaller patterns were likely done by apprentices. Overall condition Grades at NRA Antique Very Good+ to Fine- with 40% original nickel plating remaining on the frame, just traces of nickel on the cylinder, and 50% on the barrel. The grips still have most of their original varnish but do exhibit a tad of shrinkage. Mechanics work and the bore is surprisingly good for an antique .22 that once shot black powder. Strong lands and no major pits. Grooves look dark but will probably clean up. Nice example of an 1870's era engraved revolver as well as an interesting piece of history. The Whitney Armory was the oldest commercial gunmaker in the United States at the time this revolver was manufactured with contracts going back to the Model 1798 Musket Pattern when Thomas Jefferson was President. They were older than Remington (1816) and Colt (1836), and they built the Colt Walker for Sam Colt and rented factory space to Oliver Winchester. When Eli Whitney Jr. retired, he sold his armory to Winchester in 1888.
