Antique HOPKINS & ALLEN XL 4 Spur Trigger Revolver
.38 Rimfire Revolver with Antique Ivory Grips!
Here we present an antique Hopkins & Allen XL No. 4 Spur Trigger Revolver, made in Norwich, Connecticut circa the 1870s-1880s. This revolver features 5 shots of .38 Rimfire and is marked "HOPKINS & ALLEN MFG. Co./XL No 4/PAT. MAR. 28. 71" on the top of the frame. This XL No. 4 features its original ivory grips and a nickel plated finish. Hopkins and Allen produced dozens of pocket model revolvers, many not even marked with the company's name. While Colt and S&W owned the top end of the American market, H&A seemed focused on making their products within reach of the working man. Most of their best work was reserved for Merwin Hulbert & Co., whose revolvers they manufactured under contract.
The overall condition is fair. 85% of the nickel finish remains. The markings are clear. The antique ivory grips are in good shape. The bore is quite dark with visible rifling. The hammer has tension and you can feel the sear hit the hammer notches, however, the trigger return spring is weak so that without forward pressure on the trigger, the hammer will not hold in the cocked position.
