Antique London Marked Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver
Rare English Variant of a Classic Colt
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver, made in Hartford, Connecticut in 1867. It was the single most prolific revolver seen on Civil War battlefields, but this one is significant in that it was made for export to London, England.
Samuel Colt saw great success by the early 1850s and sought to expand his business interests from Hartford to Europe, primarily to gain European military contracts. London was a place naturally suited to this end, so starting in 1851 he exhibited his wares at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Hyde Park, specifically demonstrating the parts interchangeability of his firearms. Like many firearms companies vying for contracts or permissions, he presented his finest firearms and engraved sets to important people to grease the wheels. He was able to open his London plant on January 1, 1853 on the River Thames. Though his advanced manufacturing practices, reliable and parts interchangeable firearms overshadowed most, if not all, of his European competition, large military contracts were not to be, probably more to do with politics and wanting domestically produced weaponry from a domestic company. As a result, he shut the doors to his London factory in 1856, only keeping a Colt agent to sell his imported firearms from the U.S. So, in 1867, when this revolver was made, the agent was still making some sales, though the scarcity of the London marked 1860 Army is testament to how technology had moved on, namely with cartridge firearms. This is a very rare variant much sought after by collectors.
Overall condition is good. All serial numbers match. Serial number falls into the appropriate range of a London 1860 Army and this specimen does have the appropriate steel backstrap and trigger guard. About 10% of the original blue remains. Barrel address is clear. Texas and Mexico naval battle cylinder scene is faint. Walnut grips are good. Bore is in good condition. Action is very good, cylinder properly indexes. Comes complete with a new production case, ready for accoutrements.
