Description:
The Remington Model 788 was introduced in 1967 as a bolt-action repeating rifle with detachable box magazine that was priced lower than the Model 700, but only offered in short-action calibers.  The Model 788 was unique in that the locking lugs were mounted at the rear of the bolt and consisted 9 small lugs rather than 2 large lugs mounted at the front.  The Model 788 featured a factory blue finish, a 18, 22, or 24" inch barrel with iron sights, a factory drilled and tapped receiver, and a smooth American Walnut stock for the first few years with the later guns having hardwood stocks.  The Model 788 quickly proved itself a well-made and very accurate rifle despite being an "economy" model.  Shooters and hunters particularly liked the slick-feeling action and light factory trigger pull.  The Model 788 remained in production for 16 years until being discontinued in 1983.  This particular .222 Remington example was made in 1968 during the second year of production, and has the sought-after American Walnut stock.  It is an attractive rifle and is in good condition overall.  The original factory blue finish rates 90%+/-, with deductions for finish wear and handling marks on the triggerguard/magazine surround and the barrel (mainly the right side of the barrel).  The bore in this Remington is mirror-bright and spotless, with sharp lands and grooves still showing throughout the rifling.  There is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible.  The original stock on this rifle is in excellent condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, major dings, or repairs.  While there are some small handling/storage marks scattered about in the wood there are no bad spots or eyesores.  All of the original stock hardware is intact including the original Remington-branded black plastic buttplate.  A vintage set of sling swivel studs with white spacers has been installed at some point on this Remington, which remain in-place and in good condition.  All of the controls on this Remington are in perfect working order, and the action is slick and locks up tight.  This Model 788 should function just as well today as the day it left the factory 51 years ago.  As mentioned in the title, this rifle comes with a Winchester-branded 4-16x40mm scope mounted up on vintage Burris 1" Rings and a 1-piece base.  The scope appears to be in perfect working order and the optics are clear.  This scope has a standard duplex reticle and an adjustable objective lens.  If you have been looking for neat vintage rifle for your collection this 1968 Remington Model 788 in .222 Remington would be an excellent choice.
