He was known to do Sharps rifles and frequently had work done by Nimschke in his shop. Some of his work is highlighted in the Nimschke Engraving book. This beautiful gun has a 20 inch tapered barrel of about 44 caliber. Fancy burl wood is in very good condition with a good amount of original varnish remaining. Pistol grip stock with sharp checkering. Barrel retains 90% slightly toning blue. Receiver is beautifully engraved with a woodland scene of a doe laying down on one side. The other side has a handsome standing elk. The motifs are highlighted nicely by the the scroll engraving. I understand that the work was done by Conrad Uhlrich but I am not sure. The barrel was no doubt done by Nimschke and I would assume he did the receiver also. Anyway, it is a beautiful gun that I have had in my personal collection for 20-25 years. Prior to that it was in the collection of Bob Borchardt of Montana. A fine gun. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
