Description:
WESTLEY RICHARDS HAND DETACHABLE LOCK, EJECTOR, SINGLE TRIGGER, DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH SCOPE.
SN 17765. (ca. 1921) Cal. 375 H & H belted mag. (Not Flanged! Ammunition for this rifle is available everywhere.) 24″ Chopper lump bbls feature scroll engraved quarter rib mounting single standing leaf express rear sight with inlaid silver triangle at bottom of V-notch, as well as claw type scope bases. “.375” is gold inlaid behind rear scope base in front of scroll engraved dolls head top extension. “Westley Richards & Co. England” is engraved on sunken portion of top rib between quarter rib and Westley Richards patent front sight base with folding hood. Silver bead front sight has porcelain flip-up night bead. Bbl flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for .375 magnum and with importers name and address (Cape Outfitters). Bottoms of bbls are stamped with bbl makers initials “PG”, orig SN (17765) and secondary number, “19486”, (ca 1958) denoting a later re-barrel, done by Westley Richards (It is their policy to assign a new SN to a set of new bbls). Extractors have been fitted with Westley Richards superb extractor system accommodating a belted, rimless cartridge, with large sliding extractor blades camming into groove of rimless cartridge, when action is closed, and yet easily sliding out of engagement for effortless ejection when action is opened. Robust, classic Westley Richards hand detachable (drop lock) action features bolted automatic safety (SAFE and BOLTED gold inlaid), dolls head extension with Westley Richards patent sliding third bolt, bushed strikers, hinged lock access cover, and Westley Richards single selective trigger, with selector to left of trigger and gold inlaid “R” and “L”. Water table is stamped with hand detachable lock patent use number (2817), which also appears on plates of engine turned locks, which are also gold inlaid “L” and “R”. Case hardened action is engraved with well cut, large, scroll at approx 80% coverage, with “WESTLEY RICHARDS” in scroll terminated ribands on each side. Top of action is engraved “WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT ONE TRIGGER”. Top lever, floorplate, and trigger guard are blued, and have matching scroll engraving, which frames a full bodied portrait of a doe facing away from viewer on floorplate, and a prowling tiger on trigger guard bow. Trigger guard tang is engraved with SN, and extends to scroll engraved, case hardened grip cap, with trap containing a replacement top lever pivot screw (?). Nicely streaked European walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/4″ over Silver type, reddish, recoil pad with widow’s peak, and features nicely shaped, shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points behind checkered side panels, and 20 LPI point pattern checkering with mullered borders at grip. Matching splinter forend fitted with Deeley ejector has inset horn tip and Deeley latch. Leupold “European” 30 mm. 1.25 – 4 X 20 mm. scope with three heavy post/ crosshair reticle is in custom Recknagel type claw rings, rear with windage adjustment. Drop at heel: approx 2-9/16″. Drop at comb: approx 1-3/4″. Weight with scope: 11 lbs. 3 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. Included range target reflects well-regulated barrels as shot with Winchester factory cartridges (see test target). The gun is quite pleasant to shoot and well balanced. The barrels are perfectly regulated at 50 yards, and would be so at 100 yards also for any practical shooting. My target shows Left and Right shots, and then I fired the Right barrel a second time to show it's consistency.  I have not shot a better regulated double in my entire life. CONDITION: Excellent, as completely refurbished, most likely by factory at time of re-barreling. Bbls retain nearly all of a satin rust blue, with a few light scratches and marks. Engraving on ribs is slightly softened. Action retains approx 60% of an old correctly re-color hardening, fading and turning gray toward bottom. Blued parts retain nearly all of their renewed blue finish. Stocks retain most of a hand rubbed oil refinish, sharp edges and shadow line of cheekpiece somewhat softened. Checkering re-cut, and is sharp. Bores are excellent, sharp, bright, but with some light pitting 12″ from breech end of right bbl. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Trigger works. Scope is excellent, near new, with one or two minor marks in exterior finish. Optics clear and sharp. A fine dangerous game rifle.  Thanks for your interest and in taking the time to take a look. This rifle will do it all. Don't hesitate to call with questions if you have genuine interest.
