Description:
Offered is an early Colt 1860 Army Fluted Cylinder .44 Revolver complete with a Colt Archive Letter documenting that it was shipped on April 4, 1861 to the U.S. Quartermaster in New York, who at that time was none other than Joseph E. Johnston (soon to be a Confederate General). This gun differs from the majority of 1860 Armys with Fluted Cylinders (approx. 4,000 made) in that it was produced in the Military style, that is Olied Walnut Stocks (not lacquered) and Brass (non silver plated) Triggergard and Backstrap as documented in the Colt Archive letter. The metal on the gun is sharp and crisp with no pitting or rust and almost no small dings or damage. There is almost no original blue or case color visible. The gun has an overall pleasing plumb-brown patina. All markings are clear and all serial numbers all match including the backstrap channel in the grip. The grip fit is excellent to perfect. The original screws are in fantastic shape. The action is crisp and the indexing nipple to hammer interphase is perfect. Half cocked shows a weak hand spring and the cylinder rotates freely without stopping at the capping click stops. On the sides of the frame, the original shoulder stock lugs await an early Colt shoulder stock which was made slightly differently then subsequent ones. The oiled walnut grip is full and perfect except for one tiny, tiny chip as shown in the photo. Otherwise they are full and near mint. All six safety pins are standing tall with one slightly rounded. There are no sub-inspector marks or cartouches present, but it's Military Provenance is clearly documented in the Colt Archive Letter. This is an excellent example of a Historic Pre-Civil War Colt 1860 Army shipped in anticipation of the outbreak of hostilities.
